Unique Auction Site Swoopo Expands To Canada, Testing ‘Buy It Now’

I am jealous of these guys! Such a simple trick to make money. But had to be done right!

It’s been a while since we last took a look at Swoopo, the “entertainment shopping” site that’s one part auction-house, one part virtual casino. Since launching in late 2008, the site has closed a $10 million funding round led by August Capital, and has grown to over 2 million members. Now, the site has quietly expanded to launch a Canadian portal, and is also beginning to test a ‘buy it now’ function on its German site that allows users to apply the costs of their previous bids towards the purchase of an item.

For those that aren’t familiar with Swoopo, here’s how it works: the site uses a unique pricing model that invites you to purchase virtual “bids” for 75 cents, which can then be used to bid on goods ranging from video games to high-end televisions. Whenever you bid on an item, its price increases by fifteen cents and an extra 20 seconds are tacked on to the duration of the auction. Oftentimes items wind up selling substantially below their market value, but this lower price comes with some risk: if you bid on an item, you don’t get that 75 cent bid back when the auction concludes. Even if the item winds up selling below its normal market price, Swoopo can make money from these bids (the site does sometimes lose money on an auction, but relies on the proceeds of other auctions to cover them).

It’s definitely a departure from traditional auction sites like eBay, and after navigating through the flashy site it’s easy to see why it might be a bit more fun. Sure, there’s always a chance that you’ll throw away a few dollars on lost bids, which will be enough to put some people off, but you also have the potential to score a TV for a fraction of its typical retail price (of course, dozens or even hundreds of bidders might be competing against you). To help take some of the risk out of bidding, the site is experimenting with a ‘buy it now’ feature (apparently only on its German site for now), which allows you to apply the cost of your bids towards purchasing a product outright for its normal market value. You won’t be able to get the low auction price, but you’re not throwing away the cost of those bids, either, which should be enough to drive even more bidding.

Filed under: data mining, tech — jeetu @ 1:57 am

As per the mail from netflix –

As of the submission by team “BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos” on June 26, 2009 18:42:37 UTC, the Netflix Prize competition entered the “last call” period for the Grand Prize. In accord with the Rules, teams have thirty (30) days, until July 26, 2009 18:42:37 UTC, to make submissions that will be considered for this Prize. Good luck and thank you for participating!

The team called BellKor’s Pragmatic Chaos has reached a 10.05% improvement over Netflix base measurement – which means they will win the 1 million $ prize, unless some other team beats them in the next month.

Wohoo! lets get some random number generator to make one attempt a day ;-) (Thats the max they allow)

GPS coordinates lead demolition crew to destroy wrong house

Tired of blaming GPS on petty mishaps like the destruction of cars, a demolition crew in Georgia has managed to accidentally destroy an entirely wrong house based on GPS coordinates. Oddly enough, it wasn’t even the first time they’d been by: the man who cuts the grass noticed that the power box was missing from the home and holes were punched into the walls about a month ago — it was suspected as vandalism, but it now seems that the stealthy, directionless demolition company was to blame. The demolition company says it had “paperwork” authorizing the destruction, complete with the coordinates and a description of the home, which the owner’s father had built with his own hands “brick by brick.”

[Thanks, Leonard]

flypaperup

Artists [James Auger] and [Jimmy Loizeau] have put out this display of carnivorous robots. Pictured above is a clock that is powered by a microbial fuel cell. The clock is equipped with a scroll of sticky paper for catching the flies which it then scrapes into it’s cell for digestion. The other pieces include a mouse eating coffee table, a strange mechanism for stealing spider’s meals, and a lamp shade inspired by pitcher plants.

Amazon Calls NC Lawmakers Bluff, Cancels Affiliate Program Early

Filed under: Misc — jeetu @ 11:43 am

It appears as though Amazon’s email to affiliates regarding North Carolina’s pending taxes was not a bluff. I just received a follow-up email from the company saying it has decided to shut down its affiliate program in the state, as of today.

We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 26, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme expected to be passed any day now by the North Carolina state legislature (the General Assembly) and signed by the governor. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.

Please be assured that all qualifying referral fees earned prior to June 26, 2009 will be processed and paid in full in accordance with our regular referral fee schedule. Based on your account closure date of June 26, 2009, any final payments will be paid by September 1, 2009.

In the event that North Carolina repeals this tax collection scheme, we would certainly be happy to re-open our Associates program to North Carolina residents.

The North Carolina General Assembly’s website is http://www.ncleg.net/, and additional information may be obtained from the Performance Marketing Alliance at http://www.performancemarketingalliance.com/.

We have enjoyed working with you and other North Carolina-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program, and wish you all the best in your future.

Best Regards,

The Amazon Associates Team

It’s interesting that Amazon has shut the program down before the legislation passes. Could it be that the NC lawmakers thought Amazon was bluffing too? Did Amazon close the program early so that affiliates would still have time to ramp up their complaints to the General Assembly.

Of course, there are plenty of other companies that will keep their affiliate programs running in NC–though Commission Junction doesn’t appear to be one of them–but will there be enough actual affiliate revenue to tax after this?
